USHERING IN AUTUMN

 Good Morning TLB friends,

The first day of Fall is September 22nd and I'm ready!

I love to plant colorful Mums. In the north, when the weather started to cool off a bit, I couldn't wait to get into my flower beds to add some Fall color. My husband says I just like to "play" in the dirt. He may be on to something, I certainly did get it from my Mother!!

In Florida the flowers tend not to last as long as they do up North, however, being a northern girl at heart, I plant Mums anyway. It would not be Fall for me without my yearly plantings.

This year my bed is small, but sweet, and it's a great place to add color because it's in the front of the house. I only had to purchase "3" plants to fill the space! I chose one white Mum for the center and planted two Red Mums one on each side (which actually is a Burgundy color). In the Spring I planted Prairie grass which I just gave a good trimming, but in a few weeks it will flowy again and a pretty addition to the Mums.

Our landscaping lamps shine a beautiful ray of light on the flowers at night and illuminate the sidewalk. It's a bit too early to buy pumpkins for the obvious reasons in Florida. I usually wait until October and we go to the fields where they are fresh. I've also found that by spraying the pumpkins with a clear lacquer they not only are shiny but last much longer.

Here I am below "playing in the dirt" as my husband says!

Below you will see my white faux pumpkin. On it I painted the initial "B" which is the first letter of our last name. ( I hung the pumpkin from a short wrought iron Shepherds hook.) I'm not sold on the black and white check ribbon (MacKenzie Childs Company) I tied on the top of the pumpkin. I think a trip to JoAnn Fabric is in order to find something more colorful this year.

Can you just envision the color this "little bed" will have once the Mums blossom?

Drop me a line and let me know what your choice of colors will be in your "Fall" flower beds. It's such a lovely time of the year!

THANK YOU FOR STOPPING BY "TLB!"

Kathleen

  1. Kathleen you look so cute playing in the dirt. Glad you still do mums even down in Florida. Everything looks so nice. That is a great tip about spraying the pumpkins. Up here we get the ground squirrels digging into them. I bet spraying them might help with that issue. Have a great week. We are having your Florida weather up here today. Going to be in the high 90's unusual for us at this time of year. Summer is trying to hold on. xoxo Kris

    1. Hubby thought he was so funny taking that photo!! Thanks for your comment, I'm not sure about "cute" though!! haha I know that squirrels can be an issue I've had them before also.....all that work we do and here they come digging up the plants! The lacquer spray is a "game changer!"I can't believe you are going to be in the 90's!! Enjoy it while you can. Those leaves will be changing quickly.

  2. Beautiful, Kathleen! I am not going to plant mums in either the ground or pots (at least still thinking that way right now). I am ready to pull out all the annuals and plant my pansies in purples, yellows, whites, and burgundy all mixed, but am trying to be patient while waiting. We're back up to 90 tomorrow, so I'll wait a little longer. I've thinned out the summer annuals a bit though.

  3. Hi Rita, Nice to hear from you! Thanks for the kudos. I don't blame you for doing something a bit different. It's really fun to change it up from year to year. I can't believe you've been in the 90's. I'm headed to NY State for a bit with my mother, guess I should check the weather temps before I pack. Take care.
