COLORS OF THE SOUTH

June is our month in Florida that provides us with frequent rains and hot humid weather. I actually look forward to these rains. (most days) It provides us with extra water along with our sprinkler system to maintain our vegetation, and gives everything a big boost of growth and color.

My favorite on our property is the Crepe Myrtle tree that blossoms in all it's glory. This year we had quite a spectacular display of color!

The  Ixora shrubs give us a gorgeous orange display in the center of the  Gardenia hedge. They all are native to tropical and subtropical areas around the world. Their clusters of flowers last from Spring to Fall giving us beautiful color in our landscaping for the better part of a year.

The blue flowering ground cover in front of the hedge is called Blue Daze. It is a perennial plant that is heat and sun loving. It has proven to be quite prolific in our Texas home and well as our Florida home. I always love adding a touch of "blue" to my landscaping. It's not a common color you see a lot of. I love the ease of growing it, and adding it in front of our hedges adds a bit of color.

As you can see below the Marigolds that I planted earlier in the Spring are loving their location too! The Purple Fountain grasses occasionally need a good trim, but last into the winter here. They look great in a vignette with pumpkins! The back drop of an Ixora shrub adds just a pop of color too, also taking us into the Fall.

The arbor keeps hubby busy trimming! It loves it's location and as you can see it now needs a good trim. It will have a sprinkling of tiny white flowers in a few weeks also.

As you walk thru the arbor and look down the sidewalk, my favorite "Deep Blue" bench awaits. It is surrounded by 2-urns filled with flowing ferns. It sits directly across from the entrance door into our home.

I hope you enjoyed a little Florida "eye candy" today. Rainy season                            provides all kinds of color and growth!

Thanks so much for stopping by today!
Your comments are very much appreciated!

  1. Your landscape choices are wonderful, Kathleen! Love the blue bench and that ground cover (note to self: check planting zones!). Your crepe myrtle is gorgeous in the way it's pruned. I have a volunteer growing in a place not too distant from where I had one completely taken out last year (it was huge and on the fence at neighbor's property line). I hope to nurture the baby volunteer. The Indian grass is always beautiful in fall. I would often put that in my containers for late spring to fall. Other than the continuous maintenance year round, you have a little slice of heaven there!

    1. Thanks Rita! Great to hear from you. My husband prunes the Crepe Myrtle for me each winter. When Spring arrives it's always glorious to see the "many" branches of color. Sounds like your "volunteer" wasn't ready to give up yet! I hope it turns out to be a gorgeous addition to your landscape for you! Good idea about the Indian grass---I didn't know it's name....thank you for that! I use it every fall with my mums in pots too. Great minds think alike! Thanks so much for your visit and comments!
